Economic Governance for People or for the Banks?

12 October 2011, 9.30 to 12.30

at Résidence Palace - International Press Centre
Rue de la Loi 155 - Bloc C, Brussels
(Se ofrecerá traducción al español)

In 2010, the European Commission put forward a package of six legislative proposals, known as the 'Six Pack', aimed at restructuring the current EU economic governance framework.  If approved as it is, the Commission is given increased power to intervene in highly sensitive and strategic areas of economic and social policy of member states.  The adoption of these proposals has since been accelerated, with a final vote set to take place in the European Parliament in the coming weeks.

Up to now, the discussion has been confined to the Commission, the European Parliament, the Council, in consultation with technocrats and financial sector lobbyists in Brussels.  There is an urgent need to move this important agenda on the future democratic and economic institutions of the EU into the public domain.

Join a representative of DG ECFIN and critical economists to debate important questions about the future of economic governance in the EU:

* Is there a case for the proposed economic governance package?
* Is downward harmonization of economic and social policies the way forward?
* What are the implications for EU member states of ceding these competencies to the European Commission?
* What are the likely impacts of implementing an austerity agenda under the proposed economic governance framework?
* Is this the solution to the crisis?  What are the progressive alternatives?

Panelists:
Servaas Deroose, Deputy DG ECFIN, European Commission (t.b.c.)
Andy Storey, University College Dublin, Ireland
Kenneth Haar, Corporate Europe Observatory
Costas Lapavitsas, School of Oriental and African Studies/Research for Money and Finance
Dominique Plihon, European Attac Network/Paris Nord University, France

Moderator: Susan George, President of the Board of Transnational Institute (TNI)
